English Language Partners
Peace City Church has continuously run some form of English language help for refugees and immigrants since 2015. Prior to the current restrictions on gatherings, we had ~25 students in our ESL classes. We would like to offer continued support to these students through English Language Partners. The goals are to provide consistent experiences for the students to practice English and to provide social and emotional support to a vulnerable population. Once each volunteer is matched with an English student, the volunteer will be responsible for having a weekly phone call with their partner. Volunteers are encouraged to connect with their partner more often than the weekly call. Peace City will provide ongoing coaching and support to volunteers and can provide ideas of conversation topics. The majority of our English students are Muslim women, so this is a great opportunity for women who want to connect with Muslims.
Homework Help for 8th and 9th Graders
We are providing online homework help for 8th and 9th graders. Our goals are to 1) provide accountability for completion of assignments, 2) help explain and guide through homework, and 3) provide social/emotional support during a time of many disruptions and transitions.
Participating students will join the main Study Hall and spend time working on their homework. When an individual student has a specific question for a homework problem, an adult volunteer will join the student in a breakout room to help him/her.
When? Every Thursday from 5pm to 6:30pm. We will be using the Zoom app. This program will end when the school year ends, June 16.
We want to love our community members well by checking in on them and loving them the same way we love our own families. This program will match each volunteer with 3-5 individuals or families who they will be asked to check in on every 3-4 days. The individuals/families will opt themselves into this program. On the calls, the volunteers will ask basic questions: how are you? How are people feeling? Does anyone need anything? Volunteers are NOT expected to meet any tangible needs, in fact, we discourage it. We are hopeful to match individuals/families with volunteers who speak a shared language.
Face Mask Creation
Peace City has a goal to provide at least 1,000 masks to community members in need. There are a lot of different parts of the process that volunteers can help with: providing fabric or other supplies, sewing the masks, helping with mask distribution. Anyone can get involved, even if you don't have sewing experience! There are even ways to get children involved, as long as they are comfortable using scissors.
Meals For Refugees
It's time to step in to make sure refugee families have enough food. The pandemic and its harsh effect on the economy has put vulnerable refugees in an even more precarious situation. World Central Kitchen, International Rescue Committee (IRC), Office of Council Member Dannielle Glaros, and Peace City Church are teaming up to deliver 800 meals to refugee families at Parkview Gardens Apartments (Riverdale, MD) each week.
Join our team of volunteers to support refugee families who are food insecure.
